BOSTON ALUMS: WE'LL "C.U." AT THE SAIL LOFT

From 6 to 8 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, join Frank Persico, B.A. 1974, M.A. 1976, CUA vice president for university relations and chief of staff, and fellow Catholic University graduates living in the Boston area as the CUA alumni association gathers at Sail Loft Restaurant (80 Atlantic Ave, Boston, MA 02110) for an alumni happy hour. Stop by and say "hello" to your old friends and classmates! Did you know that there are more than 1,200 "CUA Sweetheart" marriages? And that doesn't even include those countless other couples that found love while studying at CUA and have yet to tie the knot!

To celebrate these relationships, we're putting together a Wine With Your Valentine gathering. Whether you're a recent graduate or a golden anniversary alum, we're inviting you and your CUA sweetheart-turned-spouse or fiancé(e) back to campus for an afternoon wine and dessert reception on Sunday, Feb. 8. Tickets are $50 per couple.

JOIN US AS WE HONOR A LIVING LEGEND

On Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, join generations of CUA alumni and friends as we honor the legendary CUA athletic equipment manager, Franny Murray, at a tribute dinner in conjunction with the dedication of the Raymond A. DuFour Center basketball court in his name.

Our Golden Cardinals in Florida (those who graduated 50 years ago or more) will join the Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., president of The Catholic University of America, for a luncheon on Feb. 18 at noon to hear the latest news from Catholic University. SAVE THE DATE: MLK DAY OF SERVICE 2009

On Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Office of Campus Ministry and the Office of Alumni Relations invite all alumni volunteers to take part in their annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. CUA students, staff and alumni volunteer will work with an organization called Service for Peace and offer beautification efforts and youth mentoring services at Anacostia High School in Washington, D.C.

Share your love of reading! Read-Across-America Day is also the birthday of everyone’s favorite author, Dr. Seuss. Join CUA students and fellow alums on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at St. Anthony’s School, 12th and Monroe streets in Brookland (across from the Brookland-CUA Metro station, next to Colonel Brooks’ Tavern).

Between 8:30 a.m. and noon, read your favorite Seuss book (or any book!) to a small student group and have a slice of birthday cake. To view photos from last year's event, click here.

CAPITOL HILL NETWORKING RECEPTION: MARCH 30, 2009


Save the date of March 30, 2009, for a Catholic University Capitol Hill Networking Reception. The CUA alumni office, Columbus School of Law, Office of Career Services and politics department, along with other groups on campus, are planning a reception for all CUA alumni who currently work on Capitol Hill or would like to do so.

REUNIONS CLASSES: YOUR CLASS COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU!

Calling the classes of 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, and 2004: don't be left in the dust! The Class of 1959 already has eight volunteers on its Reunions Committee! We'd love to have your help for your class! The date is getting closer – Homecoming & Reunions Weekend: October 23-24, 2009. Save the date so you don't miss the fun!

Attendance at the festivities last year was our largest in recent history, and we want it to get even bigger this year! However, we can’t do that alone.  Your fellow classmates want to hear from you, not only from the alumni office. Please consider being involved as a Homecoming & Reunions Committee member.

On Thursday, Jan. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m., join fellow CUA alums living in "The Big Apple" as the CUA Alumni Association hosts its first happy hour of the year — right in the heart of New York City! We can't wait to see you at Brass Monkey (55 Little West 12th Street), where CUA alumni will receive $2 off domestic beer and wine until 7 p.m.

Mark your calendars and save the date for Saturday, April 18, as CUA hosts "A Cardinal Celebration," The Catholic University of America's Alumni Achievement Awards Luncheon. The awards ceremony will recognize distinguished Catholic University alumni from all walks of life, and will take place in the Great Room of the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center.

To nominate former CUA varsity athletes or coaches for consideration as part of CUA's 2009 Athletics Hall of Fame awards ceremony, click here.

Hall of Fame awards are conferred in every odd-numbered year upon no more than five individuals. One of these individuals may be a coach or athletic director, and no more than one awardee per year may be deceased at the time of his or her selection.

Former CUA athletes must have played for a varsity team for at least two years and demonstrated outstanding athletic performance. Male nominees must have graduated prior to 1994, female nominees prior to 1999. On Thursday, Jan. 29, starting at 5:30 p.m., join alumni host Sean Joiner, B.A. 2005 and friends for a young alumni get-together at The Dubliner, 520 N Capitol St., N.W. (Red Line, Union Station). CUA alums will be gathering in the corridor bar, and will receive $1 off Harp’s Lager and Bud Light.

NEXT MONTH: Join alumni hosts J.P. Walsh, B.A. 2008, and Joe Quintas, B.A. 2008, on Thursday, Feb.19, at 6 p.m. when the CUA graduates of the last decade will bring the party to RFD, 810 7th St. N.W. (Red Line, Chinatown).

Look for the CUA banner in the front room, where young alums from Catholic University will receive  $3 Miller Lite, $3 Sam Adams, $3.50 beer of the day, $3.99 select appetizers.

David A. Zwifka, J.C.L. 1987, J.C.D. 1998,  has been named executive director of Neighborhood Dispute Settlement, a non-profit community-based dispute resolution center in Harrisburg, PA.

Christina Riehman-Murphy, B.A. 2000, and John Riehman-Murphy, B.S. 2000, announce the birth of their third son, Liam George, on March 24, 2008. Christina also received a master's degree in library science from Clarion University in Dec. 2008. The family lives in Elkins Park, Pa.


Celine Saulnier, B.A. 1993, and her husband, Tony Lemieux, welcomed their second daughter, Vivienne Catherine, on Oct. 29, 2008. Vivi joins her one-year-old sister, Lucienne. The family lives in Milford, Conn.

CARDINALS DINNER COMES TO HOUSTON

On Friday, April 24, the 20th American Cardinals Dinner will be held at the Hyatt Regency Houston. Join the two cohosts, His Eminence Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, archbishop of Galveston-Houston, and Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., president of The Catholic University of America, as well as other American Cardinals for this important scholarship fundraiser.

Gunnery Sergeant Michael Mergen, D.M.A. 2009, is one of six Catholic University alumni who will be participating in inaugural events next week as members of "The President's Own" United States marine Band.

This trumpeter and cornettist joins fellow CUA alums Bryan Bourne, M.M. 1990; Amy Horn, M.M. 1995; Elizabeth Gish Matera, D.M.A. 1996; and Ruth McDonald, D.M.A. 1990, who will play "Hail to the Chief" and more. Marine Chamber Orchestra member Peter Wilson, M.M. 1995, D.M.A. 2007, will perform as part of the Joint Armed Forces Orchestra on Jan. 18 and will serve as a ceremonial escort during the inaugural parade on Jan. 20.
