The CUA Cardinal - Official Newsletter of the Catholic University of America Alumni Association
Volume III, Issue 2
February 2008

While The Catholic University of America campus battles the wintry chill in early March, the CUA Alumni Association will be visiting our Florida friends and hosting alumni events in Tampa, Naples and Ft. Myers. With a baseball game, a theatrical performance, cocktail receptions, and more on the agenda, we can't wait to "C.U." in Florida as we head to the Sunshine State for three days of CUA alumni events next month! For the complete schedule of events, click here.

For more information or to R.s.v.p. for any of these events, contact the Office of Alumni Relations toll-free by calling 800-288-ALUM (2586).

On Thursday, April 3, join fellow CUA alums at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia as fantasy and reality join forces in "Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination."

We've purchased a block of tickets exclusively for CUA alumni.
Tickets are just $25, and include appetizers before the tour at The Public House (1801 Arch St, Philadelphia, PA 19103) from 6 to 8 p.m.

To purchase tickets, please call the Office of Alumni Relations at 800-288-ALUM (outside the D.C. area).

We need more readers! Read-Across-America Day is also the birthday of everyone’s favorite author, Dr. Seuss. Join CUA students and fellow alums on March 3, 2008, at St. Anthony’s School, 12th and Monroe streets in Brookland (across from the Brookland-CUA Metro station, adjacent to Colonel Brooks’ Tavern).

Between 8:30 a.m. and noon, read your favorite Seuss book (or any book!) to a small student group and have a slice of birthday cake. To view photos from last year's event,

To participate, please

More than 100 alumni have already joined the site since its relaunch (bringing our number of registered users to well over 6,500).

The NCSSS Alumni Board will be hosting the annual Dean's Cocktail Reception on Wednesday, March 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the University Club of Washington, D.C.

This gathering is open to all graduates and friends of CUA's National Catholic School of Social Service, as well as undergraduate alums who majored in social work. It's a great opportunity to socialize and network with friends and fellow graduates. Alums are encouraged to bring any guests who are considering pursuing an M.S.W. or Ph.D. at NCSSS.

This event is free, but reservations are required. To R.s.v.p. for this event, contact
Janet Rosenkrantz, or call 202-319-5454.

From 6 to 8 p.m., mingle with fellow alums and friends of CUA and hear the latest news about your alma mater from Very Reverend David M. O'Connell, C.M., president of The Catholic University of America. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served.

This reception is free, but registrations are required. To R.s.v.p., contact 202-319-5608 or 800-288-ALUM (toll-free outside of the Washington, D.C., area).

March Madness is just around the corner, and that means college athletic programs from across the country will come together for the 2008 NCAA Basketball Tournament.

In keeping with this spirit of regional camaraderie, D.C. area young alumni from American, Catholic, George Mason and Georgetown universities have organized a FREE social gathering for the second round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament on Thursday, March 27.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., join alums from each of these schools at the two-story Penn Quarter Sports Tavern (639 Indiana Avenue, N.W. — Red Line, Gallery Place; Yellow/Green Line, Archives-Navy Memorial). There'll be food and drink specials, prizes and more!

Reservations are required. To R.s.v.p. or for more details, contact Brandon Romanchok
 at 202-319-5608.

Francis "Franny" J. Ryan, B. Arch., 2004, died suddenly on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, in Washington, D.C., when he was struck by a car while crossing the street.

On Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m., Canine Creature Comforts (81 Lancaster Ave., Malvern, P.A. 19355) will host a "Bark 'n Ale Yappy Hour" fundraiser for the Ryan family.

Friends and dog owners in the area are invited to come with their dog(s) to enjoy some food and raise a glass in Franny's honor. A donation of $25 is asked from those wishing to attend. There will also be a raffle for merchandise donated by local businesses.

Wedding season is almost upon us, and love is certainly in the air for CUA alumni. Jason Campbell, M.A. 2006, and Serena Gibian, M.A. 2007, were married on October 6, 2007, in Chevy Chase, MD. Many CUA alumni witnessed their vows: pictured at far left, Daniel Nielsen, M.A. 2007, the bride (wearing purple sash), Emily Brazer, M.A. 2007 (in silver), and the groom (far right).

Other alumni in attendance (not pictured) included Naintang Ngeh, M.A. 2007, Kelly Kenyhercz, M.A. 2007, Lauren Sellers, M.A. 2006, William Combes, M.A. 2007, and Sean Connors, M.A. 2007.

Have you reconnected with fellow CUA alums in a neighborhood near you? Let us know. Send your name, degree year, current address, and a photo of you and your loved ones in a "far out" locale to cua-alumni@cua.edu.

As a CUA student, Joe Fisher, B.A. 1975, enjoyed an outstanding running career. He performed on two Mason-Dixon cross country championship teams (1973-74) and one indoor track title-winning squad (1973). For his efforts, Joe was awarded AAU and NCAA All-American honors.

These days, Joe's known as "Coach" Fisher to the CUA women's track and field and cross country squads. To learn more about this student athlete-turned-CUA coach, click here.
